The stage for the Round of 16 of the English Carabao Cup is set, with Wolves facing off with Gillingham for a place in the quarterfinals. There are no replay ties in this cup competition, with the game going straight to penalties in case of a draw. Wolves benefitted from a much-needed breather during the lengthy international break, in a period that also saw head coach Julian Lopetegui assume their fortunes. In the two friendlies that he overseen, the home side drew 1-1 with Empoli and beat Cadiz 4-3. A return to their once renowned defensive solidity should top the head coach’s priorities at the moment. Wolves have conceded in ten of their last twelve matchups, having only won four competitive games since the start of the season. Their home record also needs urgent improvement. Their task is even harder if one takes into account their poor record at the Molineux, where they are winless in their last four meetings with Wolves, conceding fourteen times in the process.
