West Ham United are going through a lean period, and will be hoping to address this when they host struggling Southampton on Boxing Day. The Hammers go to this game on 28 points, in fifth place while Southampton are 15th with 17 points. West Ham’s poor run continued on Wednesday as they suffered a 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup quarter finals. That was their fourth straight winless outing since beating Chelsea and it was the first time in four matches that they managed to score. In four of their last five matches, West Ham have trailed, and only went on to win one and in three of their last five matches, they’ve conceded two or more goals. Two of their last five matches have produced over 2.5 goals. Before their loss to Tottenham, West Ham were scheduled to play a league game against Norwich but that was postponed.

Southampton do not take a very impressive run to this game but will hope the rest they’ve had by not having a midweek game and the earlier postponement of their game against Brentford works in their favor. The Saints are winless in their last six matches, losing three of them. They’ve conceded twice or more in five of the six matches and the five have produced over 2.5 goals. The visitors do not have a clean sheet in the last five matches and have failed to score in two of them. Defensively, they’ve been so poor that in they’ve led in three of their last four matches but won none. In their last game, they came from down to lead Crystal Palace 2-1 at half time but it ended in a 2-2 draw. Their run away from home is also poor, with the team losing three of the last four, only collecting one point from a possible 12 in the last four away matches. Each of their last four away matches has produced over 2.5 goals.
