Two teams set to finish in the mid-table of the 2023–24 Championship will look to end on a high as Watford entertain Sunderland. This penultimate round of the season will be played at Vicarage Road on Saturday, as the hosts start 15th with 53 points and the visitors are 13th with 56 points. Watford are out of the top-six race and ten points above the bottom-three, so there’s nothing much to lose either. That said, there’s every chance for them to finish as high as possible. Sadly for the home fans, the Hornets seem to have taken the foot off the pedal lately. They come into this match with no wins in six league matches, although they have drawn five of those. One of those draws came in a 0-0 result against Hull last time out, making it a third such result in their last four outings. In fact, Watford’s last two home league games have been 0-0, underscoring their struggles in front of the goal.

Sunderland were once in the race to finish in the top six, but a run of six losses between February and March has extinguished those hopes. The 20 losses they have endured are some of the highest, as only four teams have lost more matches at this stage of the Championship season. Despite those setbacks, Sunderland are finishing their away campaign on a high note, winning two and drawing one of their last three league matches on the road.
