Wales vs England Prediction & Betting Tips - World Cup
by Joseph King | in World Cup Predictions
England and Wales face each other as World Cup Group B draws to a close. Unless England and Iran v USA produces a winner then just who qualifies for the last 16 could become rather complicated. A draw in this match will see England qualify but not as group winners if Iran beat the USA or the Americans can overcome the four goals gap in difference between them and England. A defeat for England could still see them win the group but not if Wales were to beat them by a four-goal margin. Wales have to win this game to have any chance of qualification but would need to win by four goals if the Iran v USA match ends in a positive result. The Al-Rayyan Stadium will play host to what is sure to be an unforgettable match as these neighboring nations face off for the 104th time in their history.

The bookmakers unsurprisingly have England as firm favorites with odds of 1.44 for a Three Lions’ win. Backing the underdogs would see you net a price of 8.00 for a Wales win, while a draw comes in at odds of 4.50.

Wales - England: Form Analysis
England disappointed in their 0-0 draw with the United States in their second group stage match. The criticism of manager Gareth Southgate is back in full force with fans leveling heavy accusations towards the 52-year-old’s perceived overly-pragmatic approach. The supporters may well have some valid points, as the amount of talent in this English squad should see them performing much better than their current shocking form of only one win in their last eight matches. The flashes have been there for the Three Lions, with their 6-2 demolition of Iran in the opening match providing a glimpse of what this talented young team is capable of.
Wales were second best for most of the match in their 2-0 loss to Iran in the second matchday. They provided little going forward, managing only three shots on target despite holding 62% of the possession. The Welsh previously had an encouraging run of goal scoring form, netting in 12 of their 13 matches leading up to Qatar, but have since faltered in that regard. Wales manager Rob Page has now seen his side fail to score in two of their last three matches and only net one goal during the stretch. It’s also been an ugly run of form results wise for the Welsh, who are now eight matches without a win with five of those ending in defeats. Things won’t get any easier for them as they face an England side ranked fifth in the FIFA rankings.

Wales & England Squad Analysis
Expect England to encounter a stout Wales side content to concede possession and maintain their defensive shape. The Dragons will try to hit their rivals on the counter, likely relying heavily on moments of individual quality from players such as Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey. Southgate’s England side will have to find a way to breach the Welsh defense and their opponents likely won’t have many clear cut opportunities to work with.
Gareth Southgate is working with a fully fit squad to choose from after a number of players such as James Maddison and Kyle Walker returned from injury. Walker could return to the starting 11, taking over the right back role from Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier. The manager will also have a decision to make regarding Manchester City starlet Phil Foden, who will be pushing for a start on one of the wings after failing to feature in England’s draw with the USA.
A red card to Wales' starting keeper Wayne Hennessey in the last match sees him miss out with Danny Ward set to deputise in his place. Other than that, manager Rob Page doesn’t have any new injury concerns to deal with and is expected to name a very similar 11 to the one that featured against the Iranians.

Our Wales vs England Prediction
England will dominate the ball in this match and create most of the chances. Wales will likely be feeding off scraps as they look to their aging stars to create opportunities for them on the counterattack. The Three Lions should eventually find the breakthrough in this match and it’s unlikely they concede a goal to this Welsh team that has only found the net once in their last three outings. Back England to win this match while keeping a clean sheet.
