Arsenal have another big test to their season, with a trip to Spain where they’ll be facing Villarreal in the Europa League semis. Both sides are coming from losses in their league assignments and have this as their major hope for the season. Villarreal, coming from a 2-1 loss to Barcelona, is headed by former Arsenal manager, Unai Emery, a specialist in the Europa League and will be eyeing a first leg advantage before touring the Emirates. Villarreal have lost their last two matches and in the last five outings, both sides have scored. They are however unbeaten in the last 12 Europa League matches, winning 11 and in five of the last six, they’ve managed to score two goals or more. At home, they’ve scored in each of the last 12 Europa League games and have six straight wins ahead of this game.

Arsenal, like Villarreal, are coming from two winless outings and are also dependent on winning this competition to book a Champions League place next season. The Gunners were poor once again against Everton, in their last game, and deservedly lost 1-0, leaving them with a run of two wins in the last eight matches. They have been very poor defensively, and the error that gifted Everton the winner meant Arsenal have only two clean sheets in their last 18 matches. However, they’ve done well in Europa League, winning nine and losing just once in the 12 matches they’ve played this season. Mikel Arteta’s side has failed to score in only one of the 12 Europa League matches. They are unbeaten in the last 10 away matches in this competition and scored in each of the 10; two or more goals in five of the last six. Arsenal and Villarreal have met four times in European competitions and Arsenal are unbeaten, winning two, though they last met in 2009.
