Two of the five remaining unbeaten sides in the Brazilian Serie A will face off on Match Day 5 of the league; Vasco da Gama hosting Gremio this Sunday. Ahead of the game, Vasco da Gama top the standings on nine points while Gremio, who have so far managed six points are further below in seventh. Early on Friday, Vasco da Gama saw off Ceara 3-0 to extend their fine start to the season. For the second straight match, they burst to life in the second half, precisely in the final 30 minutes, with Felipe Bastos and German Cano the key architects. The two attackers now have three goals each in three matches and will be key men in the Sunday clash as Vasco seeks their fourth straight win. Vasco leads the standings despite having played a game less. Their fine start is well captured in the fact that they have conceded just one goal, a 90th minute penalty against Sao Paulo in their second match and they have scored at least two goals in each of their league matches this season. Vasco have failed to score in just one of their last 11 Serie A matches and with two straight home wins already this season, they will be favorites here as they look to stretch their home run to six unbeaten outings in the league. However, the home team has not had the best against Gremio in the past three meetings, losing all, but they have scored in each of their last five meetings with the visitors.

Gremio travel to Rio looking to stretch their unbeaten run against Vasco to four matches, and they have the quality to do that. However, their form in the league this season doesn’t place them as favorites, having drawn each of their last three matches. Gremio are among the sides yet to taste defeat this season in Serie A but they have managed just one win, and despite having played a game more, they are three points behind Vasco. The visitors have not been as sharp in attack as Vasco this season but have managed to score in three of their four opening matches. They haven’t scored more than one though and they have been fairly good defensively, keeping two clean sheets in the four matches played. Gremio conceded a last minute penalty against Flamengo in their last match, which saw them drop two points and their concentration in the second half is one thing they will have to work on as they face the league leaders. Away from home, in their recent Serie A matches, Gremio have no win in their last four – two losses and two draws – while they have just one clean sheet in 10. They have however scored in 11 of 12 away league matches and will hope to carry this form to the game.
