With the same 1-0 scoreline that Valencia narrowly beat Girona, they fell victims to Athletic Bilbao. Gattuso’s men might have had the wide majority of the ball, yet were ineffective in their attacking plan, which can be seen by the 0 shots on target they recorded throughout the game. They boast a good record at the Mestalla lately however, winning their last three there, yet they capped off last season with two home losses and a draw in their last four home games. Things are boiling over at Atletico Madrid. After an impressive pre season and a resounding win over Getafe in the first round, they were poor and all over the place against Villareal, eventually being punished and losing their first home game 2-0. To make matters worse, Hermoso clashed with home fans after the end of the game, to further worsen the mood at the Rojiblancos camp. Uncertainty is a key issue at the moment, since with the transfer window still open, key players such as Griezmann, Felix and Morata are still not settled at the Metropolitano, which is clearly affecting Atletico’s games. However, discounting that Villareal loss, they’ve been positive lately, winning their last six games and keeping clean sheets in four of them. With regards to their tradition at the Mestalla, they have only won once there in their last five games, conceding five goals in their last three encounters there.

Gattuso’s Bats are clearly assembled to be a defensive-minded team, but Gabriel Paulista is once again expected to fill in for Comert, after the latter got a red card against Girona. In the front, Castillejo, Duro and Dias Lino look set to start, yet it is Carlos Soler who is a frequent source of danger, having scored in two of the last four games he started. For Simeone’s side, changes are expected to the starting line-up that saw Atletico get beaten by Villareal. Wing-back Nauel Molina played poorly and he will miss this game after being sent off. Morata and Felix are in good form and should be given the nod ahead of Griezmann, with Morata having scored twice in their opener against Getafe.
