Monday will witness a battle between the 2023 Gold Cup co-hosts when the USA play Canada in the quarterfinals. The winner of this latest encounter between the two neighbouring nations will play either Panama or Qatar in the semifinals. USA finished top in Group A and have now qualified for the knockout rounds for the 16th time in a row. The defence of the title they won in 2021 is going as planned. B.J. Callaghan’s charges are seeking to equal Mexico’s record of eight Gold Cup titles with this edition. They won two and drew one of their three group matches and edged Jamaica on goal difference. The USMNT are the tournament’s leading scorers with 13 goals and managed identical 6-0 wins in their last two games. The last of which was against Trinidad and Tobago. USA have never lost on home soil against Canada since 1957. In their last encounter, which was in June, USA won 2-0 in the Nations League final.

Canada ended a 34-year wait for a win against the USA back in 2019 when they won 2-0 in Toronto. They have managed one other victory against the USA since that Nations League win. The Canucks won 2-0 again last year in Hamilton on their way to qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Though difficult, they will know it is within them as they target making back-to-back Gold Cup semifinals. John Herdman’s charges were on the verge of not qualifying from Group D after failing to win their opening two matches. But they were able to secure a 4-2 victory over Guadeloupe in their last match. And in so doing edge the Caribbean nation for second in the group by a point. That win ended a run of three matches without a win. Canada have twice been crowned continental champions with their last success coming in 2000.
