The second-stage qualifiers of the Copa Libertadores is set to get underway this week with Universidad Catolica hosting Milionarios at Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado on Friday, with the winner moving on to meet either Athletico Mineiro or Carabobo in the final qualifying round. The hosts will be hoping for a better start to the season than how they ended their last, losing 1-0 to Delfin back in October. Over their last six matches of last season, Universidad Catolica won four, drew one, and lost one. They ended their season in second place on the Ecuadorian Serie A aggregate table which earned them direct qualification into this tournament. However, the Ecuadorian side hasn’t made it past the qualifiers of this tournament in their last three attempts and will be hoping to go one better this time.
Millionarios are arguably in better shape for this match, having already played two league matches and a few friendlies prior to this tournament. The Colombian side has begun the season in fine style as well, winning both matches, the most recent coming last weekend in a 2-1 over Jaguares de Cordoba. Millionarios also bowed out of this competition in the qualification rounds last year when they lost to Fluminense but have had a slightly more successful history than their opponent over the years.
