The next two rounds of matches in the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers will determine the destiny for most nations participating. In Group J, Tunisia will host Tanzania this Friday looking to keep their perfect record in the group so far. The North Africans have won both opening matches and top the group on six points, while Tanzania are third with three points. Tunisia played two friendly matches in October, drawing 1-1 with Nigeria after beating Sudan 3-0 and with two wins in the group already, they will be outright favorites here. They head to this match unbeaten in their last seven outings, those coming with four clean sheets and five wins and have failed to score in just two of their last 10 matches. The former African champions are regular participants at the AFCON finals and this is courtesy of outstanding performance in the qualifiers. Going to this clash, they have lost just once in the last 12 qualification matches, and won 10. They have 10 straight home wins in AFCON qualification matches and are unbeaten in the last 14.

These two nations are meeting for the first time and Tanzania will be keen to avoid a heavy beating like the one they got the last time they toured North Africa for a qualification game. In 2015, they were whacked 7-0 in Algeria in a World Cup qualifier. They would suffer another 4-1 loss in a friendly match against Algeria in 2018. They got to participate in the AFCON finals in 2019 in Egypt and there too, they met Algeria, who beat them 3-0, making North Africa a very bad hunting ground for the East Africans. They are not in particularly great form as they head back there; in their only friendly match in October, they lost 1-0 at home to Burundi. In the two group matches, Tanzania opened their campaign with a 2-1 win at home to Equatorial Guinea but in their second, a trip to North Africa, they fell 2-1 to Libya. The nation did qualify for the last AFCON finals but only scraped through after beating an already qualified Uganda in the final group game. This time they are in a much tough group and their history in AFCON qualifiers doesn’t favor them. Tanzania have three wins in the last 15 AFCON qualification matches, with just four clean sheets. The last time they won away from home in AFCON qualifiers was in 2007 when they claimed a 1-0 win over Burkina Faso and have gone 12 matches winless since. They have scored one goal in the last six away encounters in the qualifiers and have one clean sheet in 12 away matches in the qualifiers.
