Matchday nine in the Women’s Super League sees sixth-place Tottenham looking to respond after a humiliating loss when they host fourth-place Manchester United. It will have been a long two weeks for the Tottenham women after suffering a heavy 7-0 away defeat to Manchester City at the end of November. The loss snapped an eight-game unbeaten run for Spurs across all competitions. While they’ve managed to avoid defeat in their other cup competitions, things have not been going well for Tottenham in the Women’s Super League. They’re now on a four match winless run following the defeat and have slipped to sixth in the standings. Spurs sit 10 points off leaders Chelsea and four points behind Man City for a Women’s Champions League qualification spot in the top three. Tottenham have recently announced the signing of midfielder Wang Shuang from NWSL side Racing Louisville. However, this match is likely too soon to see the Chinese international involved. 

Manchester United were able to respond positively after a derby day 3-1 defeat to Manchester City three weeks ago. A 1-0 away win over rivals Liverpool in the League Cup was then followed up with a 2-0 away win over Bristol City in the team’s most recent outing. The victory lifts the Red Devils up to fourth in the table and puts them five points above their opponents today. United will also be looking to potentially leapfrog Man City into a top three position should they win and the Sky Blues slip up. The previously mentioned loss to City was Manchester United’s only defeat of the league season so far as they have posted a 4-3-1 total record. Working in the visitors favor for this fixture is their superb away form. Manchester United have yet to lose on their travels, winning three and drawing once in their four away trips.
