Australia will have been disappointed when finishing third in their group missing out on automatic qualification for Russia next year on goal difference from Saudi Arabia. Even more disappointing considering they only lost one group game compared to Saudi Arabia's three. Their problem was drawing four of their qualifiers and only one away win. Their 2-1 win over Thailand in September ended a run of five games without a win though that did include games against Brazil, Germany and Chile but they have only lost two of their last 11 away World Cup qualifiers. Syria are 25 places below Australia in the latest FIFA World rankings and have never qualified for the World Cup finals. They finished third in their group behind Iran and South Korea, ending up two points behind the Koreans. Just one away win cost them automatic qualification and goals were often hard to find at home with six goals in five games and three of those came against Qatar. They are unbeaten in their last six games and no defeats in their last eight. Australia have far more experience than their opponents and can get a narrow win that should take them into the final qualifier where they could end up playing the USA.
