Switzerland W vs Spain W Prediction & Betting Tips - Womens World Cup

by Joseph King | in Womens World Cup Predictions

The first matchup of the 2023 Women’s World Cup knockout stage is upon us with Group A winners Switzerland taking on Group C runners-up Spain. 20th-ranked Switzerland surprisingly topped their group over favorites Norway after a win and two draws from their three matches. Unfortunately for La Nati, they are rewarded with a meeting against sixth-ranked Spain who are one of the favorites to win the World Cup. Spain were unable to secure first-place in their group despite only needing a draw in the final match against Japan. A heavy 4-0 loss means that the Spaniards had to settle for second with a record of two wins and one loss. The winner of this fixture advances to the quarter-final where they will meet the winner of the Netherlands vs South Africa.

Switzerland W - Spain W: Form Analysis

After two hugely impressive performances in the first two group games, some bookmakers were listing Spain as the co-favorites to win the World Cup along with the United States. A 4-0 loss in the final group stage game to 11th-ranked Japan will have tempered expectations a bit. However, many books still have La Roja as the co-second favorites to lift the cup and they come into this round of 16 matchup as heavy favorites to advance.  Spain won their first two group stage matches by a combined 8-0 score. The Spanish women were on an absolute tear before their loss to Japan, winning eight matches in a row. Following their quarter-final loss to eventual champions England in the 2022 Euros, Spain have a stellar record of 14 wins, one draw and only two losses.

Switzerland kicked off their World Cup campaign with a relatively straightforward 2-0 win against the Philippines. From there, they would go on to draw 0-0 against both Norway in the second fixture and hosts New Zealand in the final encounter. A shock Philippines victory against New Zealand in the second matchday opened the door for Switzerland to claim the top spot. Their goalless draw against the hosts on the final day marked the first time that the Swiss have won their group at the World Cup. It also represents only the second time that they have progressed to the knockout rounds. The back-to-back draws probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as Switzerland have shown a propensity for stalemates over the past eight months. In their last 10 games across all competitions, Switzerland have drawn an incredible seven of them, losing twice and winning just once.

Switzerland W & Spain W Squad Analysis

With two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas back in the starting 11, Spain manager Jorge Vilda isn’t expected to stray from his 4-3-3 formation. This means that Jennifer Hermoso, who has been one of the standout performers so far, will continue to spearhead the front three. Influential central defender Ivana Andres missed out in the defeat to Japan and Vilda will be hoping she is fit for this round of 16 encounter. Besides the possible return of Andres, we can expect to see a nearly identical starting 11 to the ones that took to the field in the previous two fixtures.

Switzerland have a number of talented attacking players in their team despite often playing out low-scoring draws. The pick of the bunch is Ramona Bachmann, who plys her trade at the club level for PSG. Manager Inka Grings is likely to implement some version of her favored 4-3-3 which has also taken on the shape of a 4-3-2-1 in this tournament. This allows both Bachmann and Piubel more influence over the match by allowing them to operate behind target forward and Barcelona player Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic. There are no injury concerns or suspensions in the Swiss team so expect Grings to put out a similar starting 11 to the one that featured in the group stage.

Our Switzerland W vs Spain W Prediction

While the heavy loss to Japan may have some questioning of their credentials, this Spanish side still rightly deserve their status as one of the tournament favorites. Switzerland have proven to be a difficult side to break down but they are going to come up against one of the world's very best attacking sides. We've also seen La Nati struggle to contain top-ranked opposition in recent encounters which doesn't bode well for this fixture. We don't mind laying the heavy juice here to only worry about Spain's goal production. Our Switzerland (W) vs Spain (W) prediction is for Spain's team toal over 1.5 goals.

Spain -1 European Handicap

Odds 2.05
Spain have had no probem winning by multiple goal margins in the past year. Of their last 10 victories, an incredible nine of them have come by at least two goals. When Spain win, they tend to do so in convincing fashion. At this price the odds are good enough to bet on that taking place yet again.

Spain to win to nil

Odds 2
Despite conceding four goals in their last outing, Spain have been an extremely reliable team overall. They had previously kept six consecutive clean sheets prior to the last match, all of which ended in Spain winning to nil. It's reasonable to expect the Spaniards to want to respond after a humiliating defeat with a strong defensive showing in this one.
