Switzerland vs Spain Prediction & Betting Tips - UEFA Nations League
by Devesh Jaganath in UEFA Nations League Predictions
Matchday two in the 2024-25 Nations League will see Switzerland taking on defending champions Spain at Stade de Geneve on Sunday evening. The Red Crosses are currently bottom of League A Group 4 and yet to get off the mark, while La Roja are in third place with one point so far. Let’s get into the match prediction.
The Swiss kicked off their Nations League campaign with an ill-tempered clash away to Denmark last week, where we saw referee Daniel Siebert brandish a whopping nine yellow cards and two reds, both for players of the Red Crosses. Spain, on the other hand, played out a frustrating goalless draw on the road against Serbia, bringing an end to their nine-match winning streak in all competitions, which dated back to March.
Both sides will be desperate to notch up a victory in this competition before returning to their domestic leagues, but who will emerge with the points in this clash of the heavyweights? Here are a few key facts.

Switzerland - Spain: Form Analysis
Switzerland will likely be kicking themselves over their performance against Denmark last week, since up until Nico Elvedi was sent off in the 52nd minute, they looked the more likely of the sides to go on to win the match.
Following Elvedi’s sending-off, the Danes piled on the pressure and got their breakthrough eight minutes before the final whistle, but matters got worse for the Red Crosses when former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka was shown red five minutes before the team conceded a second goal.
With that result, Murat Yakin’s side have now won only one of their last five matches in all competitions, while drawing two and losing two of the remaining four.
However, Switzerland are unbeaten in their last nine home games dating back to June 2022 (W5 D4 L0)!
Meanwhile, after etching their names in the history books by winning the European Championship in July, Spain returned to action with a frustrating 0-0 draw against Serbia last week.
La Roja were utterly dominant across the 90, recording 74% possession and 21 shots at goal compared to their opponents’ nine, yet they were unable to find the back of the net with any of their efforts.
While Luis de la Fuente saw his side’s excellent nine-match winning streak brought to an end last week, the defending champions are still unbeaten in their last 11 games in all competitions and have only lost once in their last 20 matches.

Switzerland & Spain Squad Analysis
Swiss manager Yakin will be forced to make a minimum of two changes for this match with both Xhaka and Elvedi now suspended following their red cards against the Danish Dynamites in midweek.
The two most likely players to step into the starting lineup this week for the aforementioned suspended duo are Sturm Graz defender Gregory Wuthrich and midfielder Denis Zakaria of Monaco.
Christian Eriksen is a minor doubt after only lasting 62 minutes in the last match!
For Spain, De la Fuente’s post-match interview last week suggests that we are likely to see a few changes here, with Pedri and Alejandro Grimaldo tipped to make the starting lineup in place of Marc Cucurella and Ayoze Perez.
With first-choice shot-stopper Unai Simon not with the squad due to injury, Arsenal’s David Raya is almost guaranteed to feature again between the sticks, while Rodri could be handed his first playing minutes of this season having sat out Manchester City’s first three games in the Premier League.

Our Switzerland vs Spain Prediction
While Switzerland are set to enter this match without the services of two of their regular starters, they still have plenty of reinforcements to bring in as cover and their performance in the last match prior to the dismissals was extremely promising.
Spain, meanwhile, were wasteful in the last game, and while they may eke out a win here, we feel that clear-cut chances against the Red Crosses defence will be at a premium. Our Switzerland vs Spain prediction: Under 2.5!
