Switzerland vs Germany Prediction & Betting Tips - Euro

by Ian John in Euro Predictions

Can Germany make it three wins from three and send a real message to other tournament favourites? Or will the Swiss cow-bells be ringing loudly in Frankfurt on Sunday night? All will be revealed when Germany face Switzerland in their final Group A fixtures.

The host nation have already qualified with two wins from their two games, scoring an impressive seven goals, conceding just one.

Yet, Germany are not assured of top spot in the group, needing a draw or better to achieve that.

The Swiss, whose record against Germany isn’t particularly strong, already have four points and that may well be enough for them to qualify either as second outright, or as one of the best third-place teams. So while there isn’t pressure on Hakan Yakin’s men, they will also know that a win over Germany would give them top spot and potentially an easier Round of 16 draw.

So, while both these teams are comfortable, there’s still plenty to play for in this Sunday evening showdown!

Switzerland - Germany: Form Analysis

Following two sobering defeats last November, Germany have been relentless in 2024. The host nation have won five of their six games, drawing the other and have started the Euro 2024 tournament in fantastic form with a 5-1 win over Scotland followed by a 2-0 win over Hungary.

What is impressive is that both those results could have been markedly better had they taken more of the chances they created in the game.

Julian Nagelsmann has his team playing fast, dynamic football, looking supremely confident and with a swagger that a German side has lacked for many years now. Roared on by a passionate home crowd, they will want to finish their group campaign in style and top of the group.

Having already qualified, the manager has the luxury of considering resting key players. It is rare a manager eschews the chance to do this, so I would expect some of the key players from the first two matches to start on the bench for this one.

Switzerland are also in a relatively comfortable position, second in the group on four points, they are likely to at least retain that position, or at worst qualify as one of the best third-placed teams from the group stages.

Murat Yakin’s side battled hard to draw with Scotland after beating Hungary 3-1 in their opener. However, Germany will offer an extensive test of their credentials beyond what they have already experienced in the tournament.

With qualification almost assured, the pressure is off the Swiss, who have lost just one of their last 13 games, but they will want to take at least a point from this game to at least assure themselves of second spot in the group.

Switzerland & Germany Squad Analysis

Julian Nagelsmann has the option to rotate his team for the Switzerland game and it is likely he will do so. I’d expect a number of fringe players to start including Niclas Fullkrug, Leroy Sane and Chris Fuhrich.

Robert Andrich may be rested for the game having picked up a yellow card against Hungary.

With no injuries in the squad, Nagelsmann has an abundance of talent he can rotate into the team, while still having a group packed with quality. Jamal Musiala has been the shining light of the Germany team so far at the Euros, scoring twice and performing superbly well in both Germany’s previous games.

Switzerland have a couple of injury issues to consider against Germany. Central defender Fabian Schar broke his nose in the draw with Scotland, but is likely to play through the pain, perhaps with a mask for protection.

Breel Embolo has made two appearances from the bench as he recovers full fitness and will likely start from there again. Xherdan Shaqiri will likely retain his place in the side following his outstanding goal against Scotland.

Switzerland - Germany Key Points

  1. As host nation, Germany have won both their group games comfortably at Euro 2024.
  2. Germany have lost just once to Switzerland since October 1959.
  3. Germany have won 35 of the 52 games played against Switzerland, including 16 of the last 21 games.
  4. Germany have not lost at home to Switzerland since 1942.
  5. Switzerland have won just two of their last seven games played outside of their home country.

Our Switzerland vs Germany Prediction

Our Germany vs. Switzerland Euro 2024 Group A prediction is for Germany to win.

The host nation gained a huge amount of confidence following their 5-1 demolition of Scotland and followed that up with a comfortable 2-0 win over Hungary, ensuring them of a place in the Round of 16.

After losing to Turkey and Austria last November, Germany have won five of their last six.

They have scored 13 goals and conceded just three in those past six games.

A win or draw would also ensure they likely face an easier draw in the Round of 16 than they would get if they finished second in the group.

All those factors considered, and given their form; the data strongly suggests another win for Germany.

Switzerland vs Germany - Other Interesting Predictions

Over 2.5 Goals

Germany have averaged 3.5 goals per game in their two games so far at Euro 2024 and the truth is that it has taken a number of fine saves by the opposition's goalkeepers to stop Germany adding a few more.

The Swiss are usually very solid defensively, but Scotland caused them several problems in their 1-1 draw. A talented team like Germany, even if they remain players, should be confident of breaching the Swiss defense on a number of occasions.

However, the Swiss are usually good for a goal themselves, which makes our secondary prediction of Over 2.5 Goals a somewhat easy pick.

Niclas Fullkrug (Germany) to score the first goal

Having already qualified for the knockout phase, I expect Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann to rest some key players for this game and to give some of the fringe players a start against Switzerland.

That should mean a start for Niclas Fullkrug, the Dortmund striker. Fullkrug enjoyed a fantastic season, and he scored a stunning goal against Scotland in Germany's opening fixture when coming on from the bench.

Fullkrug should likely start against the Swiss in Frankfurt and if he does, he will be a popular pick in the goalscorer markets. Our secondary prediction is for Niclas Fullkrug to score the first goal of the game against Switzerland.

Switzerland vs Germany match : Frequently asked questions

The Group A clash Germany vs. Switzerland will take place at the Waldstadion in Frankfurt on June 23rd 2024, kicking off at 8 pm.

The BBC are covering this game live on BBC Two, as well as on the BBC Website and also the BBC iPlayer service via live streaming.

If you want to keep up with all the latest match data and statistics from this game, check out the Euro 2024 Livescore pages at Sportytrader for a wealth of data on the match as it is played.

Germany has already qualified for the knockout phase of Euro 2024. A draw or win against Switzerland in Frankfurt would see them win the group and secure an easier opponent (in theory) for their Round of 16 fixture.

Switzerland have not yet qualified for certain for the Round of 16, but draw or win over Germany would see them assured of a place in the next phase.

A win would see them top the group ahead of the host nation. A draw would see them finish second in the group and also assure them of qualification.

In fact, the Swiss are assured of finishing no lower than third in the group and with four points secured, they would have a good chance of qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams, even in the unlikely event of Scotland overtaking them to finish second behind Germany in Group A.

An all-Italian team led by referee Daniele Orsato will officiate the Germany v Switzerland Group A game at Euro 2024.

The 48-year-old has already officiated once at Euro 2024, taking control of England's 1-0 win over Serbia.

He has officiated a total of 29 games this season and awarded 134 yellow cards and 8 red cards in total over those games. He also awarded five penalties in those fixtures.

Ciro Carbone and Alessandro Giallatini will be the assistant referees on duty. Marco Guida is the fourth official and Massimiliano Irrati will be on VAR duties.

Sunday will be a pleasant day in Frankfurt, in contrast to the rainy weather in the days preceding the game.

Temperatures are expected to hit 26 degrees centigrade in the afternoon, and not be much less than that come kick off time at 8pm.

Winds are expected to be light and there is very little chance of a shower.
