Both these sides were in the second pot when the Euro 2016 qualifying round draw was made. In terms of rankings when that draw was made, Sweden were 13th and Denmark just a place below. However, both could only finish third in difficult groups. Sweden only failed by two points to qualify but it was successive defeats in September to eventual qualifiers Austria and Russia that sealed their fate. They earned ten points out of 15 at home but just eight on their travels. Denmark were in the only five-team group so were virtually guaranteed at least a play-off place when the draw was made. They would have expected to finish ahead of Albania though but finished two points behind them and nine adrift of group winners Portugal. Away form was definitely their downfall with just one win and a terrible 0-0 draw in Armenia who only managed two points in the whole group. Sweden finished their group off well after those September defeats and can take advantage of the poor away form of their opponents and take a first leg lead.
