Sunderland vs Southampton Prediction & Betting Tips - Championship
by Devesh Jaganath | in Championship Predictions
Matchday five in the Championship will see Sunderland take on Southampton at the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon. The hosts have made a relatively poor start to the season and are down in 18th place after four matches, while the visitors are just two points off the leaders. The Black Cats will be hoping to go a step further than the playoff semi-final they managed last season. On the other hand, the Saints are in search of promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Sunderland - Southampton: Form Analysis
After finishing sixth last term, Sunderland began this season with back-to-back losses against Ipswich Town and Preston North End. Between those matches, they were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Crewe Alexandra on penalties. The hosts finally got off the mark for the season with a 2-1 win over Rotherham and followed that with a 0-0 draw away to Coventry last weekend. The Black Cats managed to take just 30 points in 23 home games last season but were unbeaten in their final six matches on home soil.
Barring their League Cup defeat to Gillingham, Southampton have made a promising start to the 2023-24 campaign. The Saints have won three and drawn one of their first four games of the season and are one of only five sides that are still unbeaten in the Championship. Adam Armstrong has been excellent for the visitors in the early stages of the season. The striker has already scored four goals this season and is tied at the top of the league’s scoring charts. Southampton have won both their away league matches 2-1 this season and are the favourites in this fixture, according to the bookmakers.

Sunderland & Southampton Squad Analysis
Jay Matete and Aji Alese are both ruled out of this match with knee injuries. Corry Evans will be sidelined until January with an ACL injury, while Ross Stewart is only expected to return in September as he is still recovering from an injury to his Achilles tendon. Longer-term absentees Elliot Embleton and Daniel Ballard are yet to feature this season, and there are still no reports of when they may return to action.
As for the visitors, Will Smallbone picked up an ankle injury in preseason and is expected to be out for at least another two weeks. Juan Larios is the other injury absentee and will only return by the end of September. Che Adams was left out against QPR last week amid speculation about his future at the club. However, Samuel Edozie’s goal in that match puts him firmly in contention for another starting 11 role in this one.

Our Sunderland vs Southampton Prediction
While Sunderland cannot be ruled out on their home patch, the visitors have looked very good in the early stages of the season. Along with Leicester, the Saints are firmly expected to finish in the top two places this season. They will be confident about their chances against a Sunderland side that have not hit their stride just yet. We expect the visitors to avoid defeat in this one. Our Sunderland vs Southampton prediction: Double Chance Draw or Southampton win the match.
