Sunderland will start their Championship season with a home game against Ipswich Town on Sunday. The hosts will look to rise again after a disappointing finish last season, when they reached the playoffs but fell short. Tony Mowbray’s charges were in a position to seal successive promotions, but they are now left with just the momentum. They come here having failed to win their final two preseason matches. The most recent ended in a 5-2 loss to Hartlepool United, after earlier drawing with Mallorca. Sunderland have however maintained a good scoring run, failing to score in just one of their last 10 matches. In their last seven matches, both teams have scored and eight of their last 10 have had over 2.5 goals. In four of their last five matches, Sunderland scored two or more goals. This scoring momentum was also seen at home in their season ending games. They managed to score in each of their last 15 home league matches.

Ipswich Town also had a disappointing finish to their preseason, failing to win the final three games. They however come into this game on a high, having gained promotion after finishing second in League One. While they are newbies in this league, Ipswich are deemed organized enough to challenge for promotion to the Premier League. Ipswich Town avoided defeat the last time they faced Sunderland in 2021. That game ended 1-1 and it was the first in five matches that Sunderland failed to beat Ipswich. Ipswich haven’t beaten Sunderland in six meetings and their run coming into this one isn’t the best. They’ve lost two of their last three matches, but scored in all of the last five. Both teams have scored in Ipswich’s last seven matches. Nine of their last 10 matches have produced over 2.5 goals and the 10 have had just three clean sheets.
