This Championship Boxing Day match sees Sunderland host Blackburn Rovers at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats are thirteenth in the standings, while Blackburn are third and five points behind the top two. Sunderland claimed an away draw against Hull at the weekend, in what was as their fourth unbeaten game in five. Defensively, Mowbray’s side are well-worked and tough to score against. They have kept two clean sheets in four, while only West Bromwich has scored more than once past them in their last eight matchups. On the downside, their recent form at the Stadium of Light has not been the best possible. Sunderland have lost three of their last four encounters there, while they have won just three of their last eleven home games. The bright side is their recent record against Blackburn, whom they have beaten in each of their last three meetings on home turf.
Blackburn have had an inconsistent restart to Championship duties, with a 4-1 home hammering against Preston followed by an impressive win at Norwich at Carrow and then followed by another 4-1 hammering, this time by Nottingham Forest at the EFL Cup. Despite this shaky past week, Blackburn are still third in the standings, with a win here potentially drawing them closer to the top two places. Their goalscoring record has also been impressive of late. The Blue and Whites have now scored in seven of their last eight games across competitions, a run blemished only by a 3-0 derby day defeat against leaders Burnley. The visitors have also held an impressive away record in recent games, with five wins in seven, yet have failed to beat Sunderland on the road in their last five attempts.
