Sudan takes on Guinea Bissau at the Stade Omnisport Roumdé Adjia in this opening match of Group D. These sides know each other very well as they were in the same group of the recently concluded World Cup qualifiers. Sudan had two friendly matches coming into this tournament losing one and drawing one. They have been hit with injuries and Covid related issues that have weakened their squad. They also had a very poor run in the Arab Cup and failed to win a match, losing all three. Sudan have not had a win in their last 12 matches. Their last win was against Niger in August 2021. Their biggest problem is a lack of goals scoring just two in their last seven matches. Both these goals came against Ethiopia in a friendly match meaning that they failed to score in the other six games.

Guinea Bissau will be rusty as they have not played any competitive football since November last year. They started their World Cup qualifying campaign in style winning and drawing their first two game but then the wheels fell off and they failed to win in their next four qualifiers. They have not scored a single goal in their last four matches while conceding eight. The last two matches were goalless draws. Despite their poor form and lack of match practice they will be confident in this match as they twice avoided defeat against Sudan in the World Cup qualifiers, winning one and drawing the other.
