Benfica are going into a very important game of their Primeira Liga season as they travel away to defending champions Sporting Lisbon. Sporting are second in the league standings with 73 points and Benfica are third with 64 points. Ahead of this game, Sporting beat Tondela 3-1 for their fourth straight win across all competitions and they have scored in each of their last nine matches. They have five straight wins in the league and have scored two or more goals in each one of them. Sporting have the best defence in the league and here they face the side with the best attack. They are six points behind league leaders FC Porto and while this is still in their hands, they will need a little help from the other teams in the league. They can keep their destiny in their own hands though, with a win here, something they have done in each of the last two meetings.

Benfica come into this game on the back of a 3-3 draw with Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League quarter finals. The Portuguese side had to rise from 3-1 down to draw at Anfield and that result marked their fifth straight game to end in over 2.5 goals. Three times in the last four matches, they’ve conceded three goals and four times in their last five matches, they’ve scored two or more goals. With nine points ahead of Braga, Benfica are well on course for a third placed finish. They’ve already been boxed out of title contention as they can only get to 79 points, the league leaders’ current tally. Benfica will be pushing for a second place finish but a loss in this game will end those hopes completely. That is why this is a very important game for them. They’ve met Sporting twice this season and lost on both occasions, 2-1 and 3-1; Benfica hosted both games.
