The MLS is Back tournament continues this weekend with clubs seeking slots in the quarter-finals and among these will be Sporting Kansas City and Vancouver Whitecaps. The two face off on Monday morning in Florida, both coming from wins in their final group matches. Sporting KC bounced back from a 2-1 loss to Minnesota United in their opening game, to beat Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake in the last two group games, and will without doubt, be in high spirits for this second round clash. They could however, be forced to do without a few key players who are injured, including Felipe Gutierez and Andreu Fontas. In their group matches, Sporting managed to score in all, but kept just one clean sheet, and remarkably, they grew in each game, scoring thrice in their second game, and keeping a clean sheet in the third. They had beaten Whitecaps 3-1 in the opening game of the regular MLS season and go to this game unbeaten in five matches against Whitecaps, having won four of these.

As for Whitecaps, it has not been a smooth ride at the tournament; they managed just one win in their group. That win over Chicago Fire in their last group match was very crucial and after losing the opening two games, they went there knowing they can’t falter and they registered a 2-0 win. Whitecaps beat LA Galaxy in their last match before lockdown but were rusty coming to this tournament, conceding seven goals in their opening two matches. With their form at the group stage, they will enter this clash as the underdogs and having failed to beat Sporting in their last five meetings doesn’t help either. Along with Chicago Fire, they were the weakest teams in Group B and meeting the strongest of Group D will call for a lot from Whitecaps.
