Both Spain U21 and Portugal U21 needed to go to extra time to see off their opponents at the quarter finals stage of the U21 Euro Championships and they will meet up in the semis this Thursday. Spain were in much control of their game against Croatia U21 but were wasteful through the game. After Javi Puado’s 66th minute goal, Croatia leveled the match in the 90th minute through Luka Ivanusec’s penalty. In extra time, Puado scored his second of the day to ensure Spain continue with their title defence. It was the first time Spain were conceding at this tournament but the third time they scored two or more goals. In their last 19 matches, Spain haven’t suffered a defeat.

After keeping three clean sheets in their group stage matches, Portugal U21’s soft underbelly showed in the game against Italy U21. Though they eventually won 5-3, they had some very uncomfortable moments defensively. While they were lethal going forward, at the back Italy seemed to be able to open them up at will. The Portuguese youngsters led 2-0 and 3-1 at some points in the match though they showed complete domination in extra time. By then, Italy had been reduced to 10 men. The game against Spain will be much tougher and with the Spaniards better disciplined defensively, Portugal will have to be at their best to contain them. Portugal U21 carry to this game a run of 11 straight wins and will be confident of standing up against Spain.
