Southampton have been one of the most consistent teams after their sluggish opening this season, and will be eyeing a further rise when they host Sheffield United in Round 12. Going to this game the hosts have 20 points and are placed fifth while Sheffield remains bottom of the standings with just a point. Southampton head to this game after rising from a goal down to beat Brighton 2-1, and Danny Ings, having recovered from injury, scored in the game. It was key that they win the game, having earlier spurned a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to Manchester United. That remains the only loss for the Saints in their last five matches. They have scored 11 goals in their last five matches but defensively they have to improve, having kept just one clean sheet in the process, and have conceded eight goals in the last five games. Three of Southampton’s last five matches have produced over 2.5 goals and they have scored two or more goals in four of their last five matches. The team hasn’t trailed at half time in any of their last five matches, and actually went to the break leading in three of the five. In their last home match, the Saints lost to Manchester United and will be looking to return to winning ways, having won the earlier three. Last season Southampton didn’t have a very good run at home, winning just six. So far, after five home matches, they have won half of last season’s tally, a sign of the big improvement. They head to this game with three clean sheets in the last four home league matches and have scored twice in each of their five home league matches this season. It will be a boost to have Ings back to lift their attack which has also been kept lively by James Ward Prowse. Southampton are the joint fourth best scorers in the league with 21 goals.

On the other hand, Sheffield united are coming from yet another defeat, after conceding in the final minute in the 2-1 loss to Leicester City. The loss left Sheffield on six straight losses in the league and 10 in 11 league matches this season. A key problem for Sheffield has been the fact that they are not up to it in attack, having scored just five goals, because they are better defensively than some of the teams above them. Their only point so far, came in the 1-1 draw with Fulham and going to this game, they haven’t led at half time in their last five matches, trailing in three of them. Sheffield also have a very poor run away from home; without a win in their last 11 away league matches, losing nine and failing to score in six. While they have no clean sheet in the league this season, Sheffield have only lost heavily to Chelsea, when they fell 4-1. No other team in the league this season has scored more than two goals when facing Sheffield United.
