Southampton will host Newcastle United in their next game in the Premier League, with both teams looking to start 2022 on a high. For the two sides, it hasn’t been an easy 2021. Going into this game, Southampton are 13th with 21 points and Newcastle 19th on 11 points. In the recent matches, Southampton have shown some improvement; they have just one loss in their last five matches. Their 3-0 defeat at Arsenal also marked the only time they failed to score in those five matches. They are unbeaten in the last three games, two draws sandwiching a key 3-2 win over West Ham United. Both teams have scored in four of the Saints’ last five matches and three of the five have produced over 2.5 goals.

Newcastle United have managed just one win this season, and it was against another struggling side – Burnley. They’ve played four games after that and won none, losing three. Ahead of this game, they had a good showing but failed to make full use of the chances that came their way, eventually drawing 1-1 with Manchester United. The Magpies have no clean sheet in the last four matches and have failed to score in two of them. They have conceded 12 goals in those four matches and keeping a clean sheet here seems very unlikely. Three of their last five matches have produced over 2.5 goals, with Newcastle definitely on the receiving end. Both sides have scored in three of their last five away matches.
