Southampton’s top-two chase will pit them against an improving Hull side looking to break back into the top-six spots. This Championship match will be played at the St. Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday with the hosts 3rd with 67 points and the visitors 8th with 51 points after last weekend. Both teams have played 32 matches and have a game in hand over the teams above. Southampton are two points behind second-placed Leeds and could upstage them with a win here. They are coming off a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion, another playoff contender. That made it 11 wins out of their last 14 competitive matches, losing only once in that sequence. Even in the league, they have won nine of their last 11 matches, with the loss to Bristol City being the lone reverse apart from a 1-1 draw with Norwich. Hull are tied on points with sixth-placed Coventry, having played a game lesser and hence even a draw would see them claw into playoff spots. They are coming off a 2-1 win over Huddersfield for their fourth win across five league games, so the confidence would be there of doing what’s needed on this trip.
