Southampton bagged their first win in the league last week, beating Leeds United 1-0, and will be hoping for three more points when they host Burnley in Round 9. The two sides are just four points apart; Southampton on seven points, in 15th place while Burnley have three points in 18th place. In the last 10 league matches, drawing back to last season, Southampton have managed just one win and also scored more than a goal in just one of the 10 matches. In attack, they aren’t doing so well this season, with just six goals in their opening eight matches. Their last five league matches at home have all produced under 2.5 goals and with Che Adams injured, while James Ward-Prowse is suspended, they don’t hold promise for a lot of goals. Going to this game after their first league win of the season will be a boost for Southampton and the fact that they’ve won the last two matches against Burnley should build their confidence.

Burnley gave a good fight in their last game, but still fell 2-0 to Manchester City and they remain winless in the league so far. They’ve scored five goals in the league this season but in four of the eight matches they haven’t been able to score. In their eight matches this season they’ve already lost five and stretching back to last season, they don’t have a win in the last 11 league games. Six of their last 10 league games have produced under 2.5 goals, and they have conceded two or more goals in five of the eight. In the last five away league matches, Burnley have lost four, conceded two or more in four, and failed to score in three.
