Southampton haven't had a great season but they have another chance to stabilize in the second half of the season. That starts on Boxing Day as they play host to Brighton, with the two sides operating from opposite ends in the league standings. Southampton, the hosts, have 12 points so far, in 19th place while Brighton are seventh on 21 points. New Southampton manager Nathan Jones had his first win at the helm in the League Cup right ahead of this game, beating Lincoln City 2-1. The real battle for them though, is in the league, where Southampton are two points below safety but also two points only above bottom placed Wolverhampton Wanderers. They have a clean sheet in their last 10 matches and in the Premier League, they come into this game with three straight losses and no clean sheets in four. In their last four league matches alone, Southampton have conceded nine goals, but both sides have scored in three of these four matches. They’ve won once in the last 10 league matches and they troop into this game winless in the last four league games at home. The Saints’ situation will be aggravated by injuries to Theo Walcott, Tino Livramento and Juan Larios, all who are ruled out, while Romeo Lavia remains a doubt.

Brighton, on their part, will be hoping to bounce back, not just from the loss in their last league match, but also after their elimination from the League Cup by Charlton Athletic in midweek. They are now winless in the last two outings, but Roberto De Zerbi’s side is in a much better shape compared to Southampton. The visitors have three wins in the last five matches but they have just two clean sheets in the last 12. Both teams have scored in all of their last four matches in the league, and they have three wins in 10 league matches, keeping just one clean sheet. Brighton’s last four league matches have produced over 2.5 goals but away from home they have no clean sheet in five straight league games. Brighton have actually conceded two or more goals in each of their last five league matches. Going into this game Brighton will miss the services of Alexis Mac Allister who was involved in the World Cup final last weekend. Other absentees for this game will be the injured Danny Welbeck, Adam Webster and Jakub Moder.
