While South Korea are highly likely to exit the competition, Norway are still in a relatively strong position. Given that Nigeria have a tough game against the tournament hosts, the Norwegians will fancy themselves to go through to the next round. Victory is likely to ensure that Martin Sjogren’s women progress in second place. First time out, South Korea were massively disappointing. Obviously, facing the tournament hosts on the opening night was never going to be easy, though Deuk-Yeo Yoon’s women really ought to have put up more of a fight than failing to have a shot on target, conceding 1.89 expected goals for and posting only 0.06 in reply. However, while they were very poor on match-day one, the South Koreans showed signs of life last time out, despite once again coming off second best. Going forward, they got far more involved against the Nigerians than they did against the French, as they registered 16 shots at goal, six of which hit the target. They also posted 1.1 expected goals for, which while not great, is a vast improvement on 0.06. As for the Norwegians, well, despite looking good on match-day one, they flattered to deceive against the French last time out. The score-line made it look like the Scandinavian outfit put up a fight, though as they registered just one shot on target and created only 0.42 expected goals for, they were barely more of a threat to the tournament hosts than South Korea were, which is nothing to be proud of. Now back in calmer waters, Norway will be expecting to return to winning ways, though it’s not terribly difficult to envisage them struggling a tad. For all they beat Nigeria on match-day one, Martin Sjogren’s women didn’t look amazing in the final third, as they created a modest 1.21 expected goals for. After all, South Korea created 1.1 against the same opposition.
