It wasn’t exactly pretty, but Germany got the job done on match-day two, much as they did first time out. After a pair of 1-0 victories, the Germans are guaranteed a place in the next round, though they’ll want to go through as group winners, that’s for sure. South Africa were never expected to make much headway at this tournament, so in that respect they’ve certainly not disappointed. Despite getting off to a dream start against Spain on match-day one, they were outclassed and deservedly came off second best, while they were once again disappointing against the Chinese on match-day two. Against a Spanish side that was always going to dominate the ball, South Africa can be forgiven for not creating much, though they really ought to have done better against China last time out. China are far from minnows when it comes to women’s football, after all, they rank considerably higher than South Africa, though they’re not great, so the fact that Desiree Ellis’ side registered just one shot on target and created a measly 0.26 expected goals for was disappointing. Not only have South Africa offered little going forward at this tournament, but they’ve also struggled at the back, as they’ve shipped four goals and have conceded expected goals figures of 3.4 and 1.62. Such numbers do not bode well ahead of a game against the Germans. While South Africa have looked poor going forward, Germany have offered a considerable threat, even though two 1-0 wins would suggest otherwise. Against China, Germany created 2.06 expected goals for, while they posted 2.37 against the Spanish, who were all over South Africa, so it’s not at all hard to envisage Martina Voss-Teckenburg’s women running riot in this final group match.
