South Africa vs Uganda Prediction & Betting Tips - AFCON
by Devesh Jaganath in AFCON Predictions
South Africa will get their Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign underway on Friday when they take on Uganda at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto. Bafana Bafana and the Cranes are drawn into Group K, which also features South Sudan and Congo who faced off in their opening match on Thursday. Check out our prediction of this contest below.
Less than seven months ago, South Africa enjoyed an impressive AFCON run which ended with a top-three finish after beating DR Congo 6-5 on penalties in the third-place playoff. Uganda, meanwhile, failed to qualify for the main draw, bowing out of their qualifying group which included Algeria, Tanzania and Niger.
Bafana Bafana enter this match as the clear favourites according to the latest bookmaker odds and will be determined to make the most of what should be an electric atmosphere in Johannesburg. But, can Uganda pull off an upset on enemy territory?

South Africa - Uganda: Form Analysis
After winning the bronze medal in the previous edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, South Africa received a two-place bump in the FIFA World Ranking which now places them in the top 10 in the CAF region.
Since then, Bafana Bafana have played five competitive matches and avoided defeat in each, drawing three and winning two, with the most recent being a 1-0 victory over Eswatini in the COSAFA Cup in July.
Hugo Broos’ side are also unbeaten in their last nine matches on home soil dating back 2-1 loss to Zambia in July 2023.
South Africa have not lost any of their last 11 matches in all competitions in regulation time!
Meanwhile, having missed out on the competition in the Ivory Coast, the first half of Uganda’s year saw the side playing three friendlies which were split with a win over Kuwait, a draw against Ghana, and a defeat to Algeria.
It has been a similarly mixed bag of results for the Cranes in World Cup qualifying, winning two and losing two of their four matches to date, which sees them sat in fourth place in their group.
The visitors have won two and lost four of their last six away games and have never beaten South Africa in the four previous encounters between the nations, losing three and drawing one.

South Africa & Uganda Squad Analysis
Hugo Broos made his final squad selection on Tuesday night and the most notable omission was that of captain Ronwen Williams, who is ruled out for both games this month due to injury.
Ricardo Goss, Veli Mothwa and Sipho Chaine have been called up as the goalkeeping options in Willams’ absence. Broos has a full complement of players at his disposal aside from Sundowns' shot-stopper.
Themba Zwane has been handed the captain’s armband for the match against Uganda!
Paul Put called up 28 players to make the trip to Soweto but was forced to leave out Kenneth Semakula and Halid Lwaliwa, due to Visa issues, though the pair will be available for next week’s match against Congo.
Allan Kyambadde, Moses Opondo, Uche Ikpeazu, and Isak Ssewankambo are ruled out of the contest through injury. Isima Watenga, who plays for South African PSL side Golden Arrows is likely to start in goal for the Cranes.

Our South Africa vs Uganda Prediction
South Africa come into this match carrying excellent form, much of which can be attributed to their solid defence, which conceded only three goals in seven matches in the AFCON competition at the start of this year.
Uganda have improved in recent times but their away record remains average at best and we feel they will struggle to break down Bafana Bafana on their home patch. Our South Africa vs Uganda prediction: Under 2.5!
