Nigeria have a chance to clinch qualification for the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations. With three games remaining, they have a one point lead at the top of the group, ahead of Benin. Sierra Leone are in third, but four points behind Benin and are probably still recovering from Friday’s 4-4 draw in Nigeria. That game really should have been a comprehensive Nigeria home win. They scored four times without reply in the first 27 minutes and going into the 72nd minute had a 4-1 lead. Then the visitors staged an amazing comeback to rescue a point with three goals in 14 minutes. That game took Nigeria’s goal tally in three games to ten but seven have been conceded, making them the top scorers but with the worst defence. A boring 0-0 draw is unlikely here! Nigeria have gone three games without a win and on their travels have only one win in four. Both teams have scored in all those games.

Sierra Leone climbed off the bottom of this group with that point in Nigeria. Can you imagine what the odds on them drawing were when falling 4-0 behind. Their opening fixture in this group saw them draw 1-1 at home with Lesotho, conceding a 90th minute equalizer. A 1-0 loss in Benin followed that result. They have no wins in their last four games, though both teams have scored in three of those matches. Home form hasn’t seen that many games played in recent years due to Ebola and then suspension. Not since 1996 have they qualified for the finals of this competition but they’ve only lost two home qualifiers in the past ten years but that game against Lesotho was their first home qualifier since 2016.
