Sheriff Tiraspol and Servette will both be hoping for their first Europa League victory when they face off on Thursday evening. While Sheriff have made a solid start to their league campaign, they have failed to carry the same type of form into Europe. They were beaten in their first group-stage match by Roma. That was followed by a 6-0 thumping at the hands of Slavia Prague in week two. After losing to Slavia Prague, Roberto Bordin was axed as the club manager after just nine months in charge. New coach Roman Pylypchuk will hope to turn his side’s European fortunes around as they have now lost nine of their last 11 matches in the continent’s elite competitions. Nevertheless, their home record is very good, with only one loss in their last 19 in all competitions, and the bookies make them the favourites in this match. 

While Sheriff have struggled in this competition, Servette have not fared much better. They also lost both their opening matches in the group, 2-0 to Slavia Prague and 4-0 to Roma. Indeed, their greatest concern from those results will be that they failed to score in either match. In league terms, Servette clinched a 1-0 win over Basel last week, which took them to four matches unbeaten, including three wins and a draw. It is worth noting, though, that run came after a period of six consecutive matches without a victory. The visitors have kept clean sheets in their last two away league matches. They will need to prioritise shutting out their opponents to have a chance of winning this one.
