The weekend begins with struggling Sheffield Wednesday hosting Sunderland in the Championship. Wednesday are bottom of the table with their opponents flying high in fifth. Newly promoted from League One, the Owls come into this ninth league game of the season still looking for their first win. They have only two points from eight matches and are already four points from safety. It's not been going well at all for them at home with just one point from four league games at Hillsbrough. That came against fellow strugglers Middesbrough after taking a first half lead. Before that they had lost to Southampton, league leaders Preston North End and Ipswich Town. Their most recent Championship fixture saw them beaten 3-0 at Swansea City.

Sunderland lost in the play-off semi-finals last season. They are going well again this term though and the Black Cats will be looking for their fifth league win on Friday. Sunderland have earned 13 points from their eight league games this season but have lost three times. Another bid to finish in the play-off places looks likely this season as they are eight points behind the automatic promotion spots. They had won three successive league matches (scoring 11 goals) before losing at home to Cardiff City last weekend. On their travels, Sunderland have only lost one of their four league matches. That was a 2-1 loss at Preston North End who top the table. That was followed by a draw at Coventry but the last two at QPR and Blackburn Rovers have both been won 3-1. Another away win looks likely here.
