Sheffield Wednesday begin life back in the Championship with Xisco Munoz now in charge. Southampton had a disastrous 2022-23 season with only six wins in the Premier League. The main concern since their relegation has been an exodus of their top players. That hasn't quite happened yet but it may be a different story by the time the transfer window closes. Pre-season didn't go too well for Southampton but they played some good opponents. Benfica, Bournemouth and AZ all beat them but the Saints did win 4-2 at Reading. Their new boss knows there is work to do but there have been some good signings with Charles and Manning in particular looking lively new recruits. Players such as Ward-Prowse, Lavia, Armstong, Alcaraz, Tella and Adams are still at the club. While they remain at the club the Saints will definitely be promotion candidates.

Sheffield Wednesday somehow won the League One play-offs last season. Not bad after losing a semi-final first leg 4-0 at Peterborough United. Soon after their win at Wembley, coach Darren Moore left the club. Former Watford boss Xisco Munoz is now in charge. He has a real job on his hands to ensure that the Owls don't go straight back to League One. Top signing so far has been Chilean international Juan Delgado but they don't look anywhere near as strong as their opponents. The two sides met last year in the Carabao Cup with the Saints (who reached the last four) winning on penalties. Before that Wednesday had lost three in a row to Southampton and failing to score in any of the matches.
