Sheffield United - Preston North End: Form Analysis
Sheffield United secured automatic promotion back to the Premier League on Wednesday when they defeated promotion-chasing West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at home. The win meant that their tally of 85 points is unassailable with two matches left to play. Paul Heckingbottom’s men have a seven-point lead on third place and also have a game in hand. They join league winners Burnley as the two teams to be automatically promoted with the third team now set to come through via the playoffs. The Blades have spent the last two seasons in the Championship following their relegation from the topflight in the 2020/21 season and missed out on a return in the previous campaign as they were eliminated in the semifinals of the playoffs by eventual winners Nottingham Forest. Seeking not to go through that again, Sheffield have been superb this season and have won the second most matches with 26, one less than Burnley and come to this match with a three-match winning streak. With the match against Preston being played at Bramall Lane, the South Yorkshire club will go out in search of a win with the atmosphere expected to be loud.
Preston North End will hope to join Burnley and Sheffield in the Premier League next season but they first have to make sure that they are among the four teams that will jostle for that last remaining slot. The Invincibles have done themselves no favours in the last few weeks as they have been unable to win their last three matches with two ending in defeat. This woeful run has seen them drop out of the top six and now are two points adrift and tied with West Brom at 63 points each. Ryan Lowe’s men have to win their two remaining fixtures and hope that more than one of the teams immediately above them falter. If they beat Sheffield then their last fixture against Sunderland, currently in sixth, will be the ultimate cup final. Preston’s away form is a reason for concern as they have lost three of their last four road matches. They are also without a win against Sheffield in five straight matches. Preston drew 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers, also gunning for a playoff slot, last time out and this should give them hope that they can salvage their season starting Saturday.

Sheffield United & Preston North End Squad Analysis
Paul Heckingbottom will have the same squad that defeated West Brom available to him with no injuries to be reported. He might switch up the starting line-up though and give several players who haven’t gotten enough minutes a chance to shine. Club top scorers Iliman Ndiaye and Oliver McBurnie who have both been involved in 39 of Sheffield’s 67 goals should keep their places in the squad to try and end their recent struggles in front of goal.
Preston North End players also came through unscathed after their draw with Blackburn Rovers last weekend and with the team ending a two-game losing run, manager Ryan Lowe could keep the same squad that started intact for this match. A stoppage-time own-goal spared Preston’s blushes against Blackburn and for this to not reoccur, top scorer Thomas Cannon (nine goals) alongside strike partner Troy Parrott (three goals) will have pressure on them to lead from the front.
