Senegal - Gambia: Form Analysis
Group C has been christened the AFCON 2023 Group of Death and there could be sense in that looking at the members. Apart from Senegal and the Gambia, there is also Cameroon and Guinea. As Senegal start their title defence, they will be well aware of the expectations and advancing from this group is a key requirement. They will thus go here gunning for an opening win. In the last two editions, Senegal went all the way to the final, which explains their rating as favorites. To this game, Senegal enters with an impressive run. They are unbeaten in their last four outings, winning three. The Lions of Teranga have kept straight clean sheets in their last four matches. In their last outing, a warmup game for this competition, Senegal beat Niger 1-0. With a seven-game unbeaten run in AFCON matches, Senegal have the best run among the teams in Ivory Coast. They’ve lost just once in 12 AFCON matches, winning seven. In their last 12 AFCON matches, they have nine clean sheets.
Gambia are making their second appearance at AFCON after their debut in the last edition. They went all the way to the quarterfinals on their debut before elimination by Cameroon and will hope to do even better now. Facing a side they share so much roots with, Gambia will want to elevate themselves here, though they remain outright underdogs. Their recent form doesn’t do them much favors either. Gambia’s only warmup game to this competition would have been against Morocco but that was canceled. They will troop to this game winless in their last three matches, having lost the last two. The last time they played competitively it ended in a 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast in the World Cup qualifiers. Earlier, they lost 3-2 to Burundi and prior to that they had played out a 2-2 draw with Congo in a qualifier to this tournament. One area of concern for Gambia will be in defence. They haven't done so well there, conceding at least twice in each of the last four matches. In attack though, they come here with good numbers, scoring in all but one of their last five matches. Gambia scored two or more in three of their last four matches. In their debut AFCON appearance, they registered three wins in five.

Senegal & Gambia Squad Analysis
Senegal have taken a star-studded side to Ivory Coast for this tournament and Sadio Mane will definitely be the highlight. In the last four matches, Mane has scored three goals and will be the man in focus here. There are six Premier League stars also in the Senegal team, which makes them really superior here. Back-up goalkeeper Seny Dieng and Boulaye Dia have been ruled out of the tournament though. For the Gambians, Assan Ceesay will be the leader once again after an impressive season in the Saudi Pro league. The forward has scored six times in 18 matches for Damac FC. The team had a traumatic flight to Ivory Coast, at some point being forced to make an emergency landing. However manager Tom Saintfiet will hope his charges are well rested in time for the game.
