Portland Timbers have been off color since emerging tops in the MLS is Back tournament, and they will be hoping for better times when they head to Washington to face Seattle Sounders. The two sides have a four-point gap between them; Sounders having managed 15 points and in second place in the Western Conference and Portland on 11 points in sixth place. In their last match, Sounders dropped points in a 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake, twice letting go of the lead in the game and they will have themselves to blame for not being at the top of the table heading to this game. That should have been a third straight win for Sounders were it not for Pablo Ruiz’s late goal for Salt Lake, but with a three-match unbeaten run, they will feel motivated for this clash. Seattle Sounders have scored in each of their last six matches and have netted two or more goals in four of their last five matches. They last met with Portland in late August and Sounders walked away with a 3-0 win and having beaten Portland in the last two meetings, they will be confident of upsetting their visitors again. In their last five matches, Sounders have headed to the break leading in three and trailed in one. Each of the last seven meetings between the two sides has produced over 2.5 goals.

Portland have not managed a win since their 2-1 victory over Orlando City in the MLS is Back tournament. They head to this game straight from a 3-2 home loss to LA Galaxy, which extends their run to three winless outings. They have not been at their best in defence, conceding in each of their last 10 matches, but notably, they have failed to score in just one of the 10. In the last three matches, Portland Timbers have conceded 10 goals, including three from Sounders. Playing away from home, they will be the underdogs here and the 3-0 loss to Seattle in the last meeting was their worst performance against the side from Washington since their loss by the same margin in 2012. Each of their last six matches has produced over 2.5 goals.
