Portland Timbers are running against time in their quest to finish in the MLS final series playoff spots as they travel to top-two contenders Seattle Sounders. This Western Conference MLS match at Lumen Field on Sunday will see the hosts start 3rd with 40 points while the visitors are 12th with 29 points. Seattle are tied on points for second spot with Los Angeles FC although they have played two games more. They are still in race to finish in the top-two spots but recent form has been worrying. They have won just three of their last 12 MLS matches, drawing five and losing four. Dropping points fairly consistently has been a malaise and one of the prime reasons that they are still not challenging for the top spot. Even home form isn't any better with only two wins from their last nine MLS home matches.

Portland need to cover the four-point with top-nine spots in the Conference, having already played a game more than the current incumbent of that spot. With a tally of just 30 goals scored, Portland are one of the lowest-scoring sides in the entire MLS and only two Western sides have netted fewer goals. Even their away form is one of disappointment with no wins across seven MLS trips – drawing four and losing three.
