Scotland vs Hungary Prediction & Betting Tips - Euro
by Ian John in Euro Predictions
Expect fireworks on Sunday when Scotland face Hungary in a match that both teams must win in order to stand any chance of progressing into the Round of 16 at Euro 2024.
The tenacious Scots currently lie third in the group following their 1-1 draw with Switzerland, but another draw here would see them with just two points, and likely not enough to qualify for the knockout phase.
Hungary are in even worse shape after two successive defeats and they need to beat Scotland, ideally by as big a score as possible, to even give themselves a remote chance of qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams.
With both sides desperate to win, it should be an attacking and open clash between the two, perfect for the football fan to enjoy on Sunday evening!

Scotland - Hungary: Form Analysis
Scotland’s record coming into the Euro 2024 tournament wasn’t great and it hasn’t improved much since. A dismal display in their 5-1 defeat to Germany in their opening game was then followed by a much-improved display in a 1-1 draw with Switzerland.
The Scots could have won that game, but equally could have lost it, but their performance levels were much better. That should give the Tartan Army, out in full voice in Germany this summer, real hope that they can land a win over the Hungarians.
Yet, they have still won just one of their last eleven games, losing six of those matches, so they are going to have to increase their level of performance yet again if they are to beat Hungary at the MHP Arena on Sunday night.
Hungary came into the tournament with a very solid record of just one loss in their last 16 games. However, it has all unravelled for Marco Rossi’s team as they lost both their opening group games (3-1 to Switzerland and then 2-0 to Germany).
In both those fixtures, Hungary had chances to score, but have only taken one of the chances they have created so far. More worryingly for the manager, their defence, which had conceded just two goals this year heading into the tournament, has shipped five goals in the last two matches.
Scotland have won two of the last three games between the two teams, but every one of the nine games played between the two so far have been friendlies. And the stakes could not be higher for their first clash in a major tournament on Sunday.

Scotland & Hungary Squad Analysis
Scotland manager Steve Clarke will have to make at least one change to the team that drew with Switzerland. Defender Kieran Tierney has returned to Arsenal for treatment after injuring his hamstring against the Swiss. That injury ruling the defender out of the rest of the tournament.
Scott McKenna, who came on for Tierney against Switzerland, will likely deputise. Ryan Porteous serves the second of his two-game ban for his sending off against Germany but other than that the Scots have their other 24 players available.
Brighton’s Billy Gilmour will likely continue in midfield after impressing against the Swiss. Clarke will likely retain the other nine players that started the Swiss game given how well the team played in that fixture.
Hungary manager Marco Rossi has the benefit of a fully fit squad to pick from for the fixture with the Scots. However, it will be interesting to see what changes he makes to his team after two successive defeats have left them on the verge of exiting the tournament.
With goals required, Hungary will likely line up in as attacking a formation as they can, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkez likely to be their main threats going forward.

Our Scotland vs Hungary Prediction
Our prediction for the Scotland v Hungary Group A game at Euro 2024 is for Both Teams to Score.
With Germany already confirmed as qualified from Group A and Switzerland on four points in second place in the group, both Scotland and Hungary could qualify as one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament. To give themselves a chance of that, either team must win this game.
With a draw no use to either team, this should ensure an attacking and open game. History shows both sides tend to score in matches, but also both also tend to concede.
This therefore makes the Both Teams to Score bet clearly the best option for our main prediction.
Scotland vs Hungary - Other Interesting Predictions
Over 2.5 Goals
Our first prediction for the Hungary v Scotland Group A game is for both teams to score, and given that both side must also win this game, the Over 2.5 Goals market is another excellent option for our secondary bet.
Two of Scotland's last three games and three of Hungary's last four have seen over 2.5 goals scored and with the added need for a win to stand any chance of staying in the tournament, this looks another good betting choice for the game.
Anytime Correct Score - 2-1
Our final prediction for this game is a rare market, any anytime correct score bet, which you can't find at many bookmakers. Having said both teams will score, but that one will win the game, it makes sense that at some point, we will see a scoreline of 2-1.
So our final prediction for the Scotland v Hungary game is for Scotland to lead 2-1 at some point in the game.

Neither Scotland nor Hungary can assure themselves of a place in the knockout phase for certain, regardless of the outcome of their game on Sunday.
Scotland could finish second in the group, but would require Switzerland to lose to Germany, and the Scots to overturn a goal difference of -6 to the Swiss in order to finish above them in the table. So if Scotland beat Hungary 3-1, they would require the Swiss to lose to Germany by five goals in order to leapfrog the Swiss.
If Switzerland win or draw, Scotland can only finish third in the group with a draw or win. However, a win would radically improve their chances of finishing as one of the four third-placed teams with the best record. A draw would likely see them eliminated.
Hungary must win to finish third in the group and give themselves a chance of reaching the Round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams. However, they would be connecting on other teams finishing third with a worse record than themselves in order to progress into the next phase of the tournament.
Rainy weather in the days leading up to the game on Sunday should give way to a cloudy, but sunny day in Stuttgart for the Scotland vs Hungary game.
Temperatures at kick-off are expected to be around 22 degrees centigrade, with light winds and only a slight chance of rain.
Argentinian referee Facundo Tello will officiate the Scotland vs Hungary clash in Group A at Euro 2024.
Mr Tello refereed the game between Turkey and Georgia earlier in the tournament, awarding three yellow cards in total and no reds.
Across all games this season, Mr Tello has refereed 23 games, issuing 105 yellow cards and five red cards in total (four of those straight red cards). He has also awarded 11 penalty kicks across those 23 matches.
Compatriots Gabriel Chade and Ezequiel Brailovsky will be his assistant referees for the game. Norway's Espen Eskas is the fourth official while Spaniard Alejandro Hernandez will be the official in charge of VAR.
