On match week 37 in the Italian Serie A, struggling Sassuolo and Cagliari face off, with four points separating them. Hosts Sassuolo come into the game three points below safety, while Cagliari are a point above the drop zone. For both sides, therefore, this is a key game. With their inferior goal difference, Sassuolo will be relegated if they fail to match Frosinone and Empoli’s result this weekend. The task ahead of them is daunting, considering they have just seven wins all season. They haven't beaten Cagliari in their last seven Serie A meetings either. However, they should know just how important this one win can be to their season. In the last two meetings with Cagliari, they lost. That includes a 2-1 defeat in the reverse fixture, when Cagliari came from a goal down with two stoppage time goals. Coming into this game they aren’t on a great run, with just two wins in the last 17 league matches. They do, however, have a good scoring run in these matches, failing to score in just four of their last 15 matches. With this mix has come high scoring returns; five of their last six league matches had over 2.5 goals.

Unlike Sassuolo, Cagliari’s survival is in their control. A win here could be all they need to secure their place in the Serie A. If they win here and Empoli lose, then survival will be achieved. Otherwise, they need two wins in their final two matches or at least match Empoli’s results in those final two games. The problem is that Cagliari aren’t in great shape coming to this game. They suffered a 5-1 away loss at AC Milan last time out, worsening their already poor season. Like Sassuolo, they’ve managed just seven wins all season in Serie A. The loss to Milan was their fifth straight winless outing, with two defeats in there. Their surprise 2-1 win over Atalanta early in April is their only victory in the last eight matches. While they are fighting not to head back to Serie B after one season, Cagliari's major worry is their away form. They have just a win in their last 14 away matches in all competitions. In their 20 away matches this season, they have two wins and two clean sheets.
