Guinea-Bissau will be looking to move closer to qualification for the 2023 AFCON when they travel to Sao Tome é Principe. This is a Group A fixture pitting the hosts, bottom of the standings against Guinea-Bissau, placed second. Sao Tome are already out of contention for a place in the finals and this is just a formality for them. They lost 2-0 to Sierra Leone in their last game in this group. Their only point so far in Group A has come from the earlier 2-2 draw with Sierra Leone. Heading into this game, they have no win in five, and just one in 10. The 1-0 win over Mauritius in March 2022 is Sao Tome’s only clean sheet in 10 matches. In the remaining nine, they conceded two or more goals. Sao Tome have seven losses in 10 matches, and in one of their recent defeats, they conceded 10 against Nigeria.

Guinea-Bissau thrashed Sao Tome 5-1 in the first meeting in this group. They know a win here will be as good as a place in the final competition if Sierra Leone slips. In their last away game, Guinea-Bissau beat group leaders Nigeria 1-0 and this should motivate them. However, they are coming from a loss at home to Nigeria, thus this is a key game. four points from their remaining two games will be enough for Guinea-Bissau to qualify. To get that, they have to first of all improve on the fact they haven't scored more than a goal in the last four. The last time they managed more than a goal was in the 2-2 draw with Sierra Leone in June 2022. They’ve actually failed to score in two of their last three matches but it should get better here. In six AFCON qualification matches, they’ve lost once, and won four times.
