The third round of the Korean top league is here and among the matches lined up, Sangju Sangmu will be hosting Gwangju on Saturday. Hosts Sangju head to this game on three points and placed seventh in the standings while Gwangju are still seeking their first point of the season. For Sangmu, this is a season they have nothing to gain, or rather to lose as they will be relegated at the end of it, no matter where they finish. How this affects the way they play in the season remains to be seen but they have already had mixed results in the opening two rounds. They were thrashed heavily by Ulsan in the opening game, but after the 4-0 beating they recorded a 2-0 win over Gangwon in Round 2. They had a strong finish last season, their best in recent seasons as they finished seventh. In their last match, they showed massive improvement and will be looking to build on it, as well as a run of three wins in their last five matches going back to the end of last season. Sangju have had a massive change in personnel and while they are still gelling, they will be glad to play a second straight match at home, where they have four wins in the last five matches. They have scored at least two goals in four of their last five home matches but have just one clean sheet in the five.

Gwangju have spent the last two seasons in the second tier, and their return to the top flight as K League 2 champions has not been very inspiring. They have suffered two losses in the opening two matches, and as a result are placed bottom of the table. Gwangju are among the three teams yet to register a point in the league and once of the five yet to register a win. As they seek to put that bad start behind them, they will be wary of the fact that they have also not scored a goal yet this season. They lost 2-0 to Seongnam and 1-0 to Seoul, making it four straight defeats in competitive action. Drawing back to last season, they have three losses in the last five away matches, a run they will be hoping to fix here. Though they showed much improvement in defence against Seoul, the fact that they managed just one shot on target in 90 minutes doesn’t leave them placed so well ahead of this clash.
