Sampdoria finished ninth in Serie A last season. That was a place and six points behind their opponents in this game who took the final Europa League qualifying position. The summer has seen them busy in the transfer market with their top signing being goalkeeper Emil Audero from Juventus for £18m. They have also added midfielder Jakub Jankto from Udinese. There have been two major departures though with Joachim Anderson heading to Lyon and Dennis Praet to Leicester City. Sampdoria ended last season with a home win over Juventus but before that had gone five league games without a win. Three of their last five home league games have ended in defeat.

Lazio finished eighth in the table last season missing out on the Champions League places by ten points. They have also had a busy summer with their top new recruit being Manuel Lazzari from SPAL for £9.9m. Lazio had an excellent preseason winning all six of their friendlies including wins over Bournemouth and Celta de Vigo. They only won two of their last five league games last season but that did include a 2-1 win at Sampdoria that went a long way towards clinching that Europa League place.
