FC Salzburg welcomes German giants Bayern Munich to the Red Bull Arena in this round of 16 match in the Champions League. The home team have secured another Austrian League title with 3 matches to spare. They are on 48 points on the league table, 13 clear of the second placed team. Salzburg finished in second position in their group just a point behind group winners Lille. Their overall record in the group stage was three wins, two losses and a draw. This is the first team in Salzburg’s history that they have progressed into the knockout stages of the Champions League. In their two previous matches against Bayern in last season’s group stage they lost 6-2 away and 3-1 at home. Salzburg have only won once in their six previous matches against German. This win was however achieved in the last match against a German team when they beat Wolfsburg 3-1.

Bayern Munich suffered a shock 4-2 away loss to Bochum in their last match. The German Champions despite this loss still hold a six point lead in the Bundesliga. They missed the chance to go nine points clear of second placed Dortmund with the loss. Bayern flew through the group stages with a perfect 100% record and along with Liverpool and Ajax were the only teams to achieve this feat. They were also the last team to do achieve this back in the 2019/20 season. This will be the fourth time Bayern Munich meet Austrian opposition in the knockout stage and have won the previous three ties.
