Two sides that have gotten off to contrasting starts in he MLS this season will do battle this week when St Louis City plays host to the Portland Timbers at City Park on Sunday. St Louis City have started the season better than the rest in the Western Conference, currently leading the way after nine matches. The visitors have taken 19 of a possible 27 points so far this season with a record of six wins, one draw, and two losses, scoring 21 goals and conceding ten to date. St Louis City played out a  1-1 draw against the Colorado Rapids in their last match, which allowed the Seattle Sounders to pull level with them on 19 points, while LAFC in third is on 18 points, with a game in hand. St Louis City have won three and lost one of their four home league matches so far and have looked dangerous each time they’ve played, scoring 16 goals while conceding just three at home. The visitors will likely come out of the blocks quickly in front of their home crowd, and if they can get an early goal, they should go on to win the match comfortably.

Meanwhile, the visitors have struggled to find their best form so far this season and currently sit 10th in the 14-team Western Conference, with eight points after their first nine matches. Portland has managed two wins to date, along with two draws, and five losses, the most recent of which came last weekend against Cincinnati 2-1. In their five matches on the road this season, Portland have failed to secure a single win, drawing once and losing the other four matches. When these sides last met in March, Portland were beaten 2-1 despite taking the lead in the third minute of the match. Based on their form since then, they are likely to find it difficult to take anything for this match as well.
