Fifth placed St Etienne are a point off the top four after nine league games this season. They needed a goal ten minutes from time to beat Guingamp at home in their opening game and then drew their next three league games, two of them 0-0. Their unbeaten run inevitably ended when visiting runaway leaders PSG, going down 4-0 to leave them on six points after five matches. Their struggle looked to continue when falling 1-0 down at home to Caen but they rallied to get a 2-1 win and their return to form continued with a win at Toulouse followed by a home victory over struggling Monaco. Their unbeaten run ended with a 3-1 defeat at second-placed Lille. Home form for St Etienne is strong with only one loss in the last 13 league games and are unbeaten in their last seven home matches against Rennes though the last five have all ended in draws.

Rennes are 11th in the table and have 11 points from their nine league games. They lost their opening game at Lille but then had two home wins and an away draw for a solid start to the season. Then form dipped with three straight losses and a draw at home to Toulouse before a 2-1 win at Monaco who are in the relegation zone. They are also in the Europa League and so far in their group have a home win and an away defeat. Away form in Ligue 1 has one win in their last five. The home side are in the better form and can get the three points here.
