Second placed Rangers continue to try and close the gap on Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic. They have their second away match of the week as they travel to 10th placed Ross County. Rangers have won both their games played since the Scottish Premiership season resumed. However, neither of their victories were straightforward ones. They had to come from behind twice to beat Hibs 3-2 last weekend. Midweek saw them travel to Aberdeen and they were 2-1 down going into second half stoppage time. They eventually won 3-2 and that closed the gap at the top to six points. It'll go back to nine if Celtic can defeat Livingston at home on Thursday evening. Everything is building towards their home game against Celtic on January 2. They have this game and a home match against Motherwell before that vital game. Rangers simply cannot afford to slip up with Celtic in such good league form. Rangers aren't always at their best on the road. The win at Aberdeen ended a run of one point from two away games. They have now four of their eight games but that's not good enough seeing that Celtic have 24 points from their nine away league fixtures.
Ross County are battling against relegation to the Scottish Championship. They have lost their last two league games, both by a 2-1 scoreline and come into this game only out of the relegation play-off position on goal difference from Kilmarnock. They are three points above bottom-of-the-table Dundee United but have a game in hand on them. Having a game in hand doesn't mean much if you don't get any points from them. Ross County will do well to get anything from this game but like Rangers have a massive match on the horizon. Their next game is a trip to Dundee United, one they can't afford to lose. Ross County have only won four of their 17 league games with 10 losses and 28 goals conceded. Home form has seen them earn eight points from nine games with only wins over Kilmarnock and St Mirren. August saw them lose 4-0 at Rangers and the last five games against them have seen Ross concede at least three goals. In 17 previous meetings, Ross have never beaten Rangers and lost 14 of them.
