Romania had their friendly match with England in June called off and they will start their 2020/21 UEFA Nations League campaign with a home game against Northern Ireland this Friday. The two sides have not had good runs in the European Cup qualifiers and will hope the Nations League comes with some comfort. In the 2018/19 Nations Cup, Romania went unbeaten in their group, with 12 points from six matches, and finished second to Serbia. Heading here, their last match ended in a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Spain in Euro qualifiers, stretching their winless run to three matches after an earlier 2-0 defeat by Sweden and a 1-1 draw with Norway. They have four wins and four losses in their last 10 matches and they haven’t scored in their last two matches, while failing to keep a clean sheet in the last three. Seven of the last 10 matches involving Romania have ended in over 2.5 goals and they have managed to score in 12 of their last 15 matches. In competitive matches alone, Romania have managed five wins and two losses in the last 10 and failed to score in just three. In the last three meetings with Northern Ireland, Romania have gone unbeaten and haven’t conceded a goal – winning two and drawing one.

Northern Ireland were not as good as Romania in the previous Nations League campaign, failing to win any of the matches in their group, and as a result finishing bottom. In League B, they were the only side that failed to register even a point and this time they take another stab at it, with a match against one of the top performers in the previous campaign. They had a friendly match with Ukraine in June canceled and this will be their first match since the 6-1 defeat by Germany in the Euro qualifiers in November 2019. The loss came right after a 0-0 draw with Netherlands and they will be hoping to return to winning ways. Northern Ireland’s only win in their last five matches, came in a friendly game, a 3-2 win over Czech Republic but they have managed to score in each of their last five away matches – four competitive and one friendly. Four of the five away matches have produced over 2.5 goals and they have four wins in their last 10 competitive matches away from home.
