Romania plays host to Iceland at the Stadionul Steaua in Bucharest for this World Cup Qualifier Group J match. The home team are currently in second position in the group with 13 points while Iceland sit in fifth position with 8 points. Both teams have played eight matches. The Romanians are coming off a 1-0 victory in their last match against Armenia. The group has already been won by Germany so the home team will be chasing victory in their last two matches to try and secure second spot and a passage to the promotional playoffs. They know nothing short of victory will be good enough as third placed North Macedonia are hot on their heels just a point behind. They have won three of their four home matches in the group with one loss coming against group winners Germany. Romania have kept clean sheets in their last two qualifying matches at home.

Iceland had an excellent 4-0 win over Lichtenstein in their last match which was their first win at home in five qualifying matches. The visitors are in fifth position, five points behind second placed Romania and don’t have a realistic chance of making the promotional playoff. They will need to beat Romania and also win their last match away to Lichtenstein. That alone is difficult but they will also need other results to go their way which makes it almost impossible. Iceland have only kept one clean sheet in their last 10 away matches. Prior to their win in the last match Iceland were five games without a victory.
